Caring for and Handling Your Hearing Aids

Caring for and Handling Your Hearing Aids

Hearing aids are small, advanced devices that support your hearing throughout the day. With proper care and handling, they will perform better, last longer, and remain comfortable to use. Fortunately, taking care of your hearing aids does not require technical expertise — just a few simple daily routines.

Daily use and handling

Always handle your hearing aids with clean, dry hands. Insert and remove them gently, preferably over a soft surface in case one slips. Hearing aids are designed for daily use, but they are not fond of hard floors.

Put your hearing aids on after using hair products, makeup, or perfume. These products can gradually block microphones and openings. When removing your hearing aids in the evening, switch them off first to avoid feedback (that familiar whistling sound).

Cleaning and everyday care

Daily cleaning helps keep sound clear and comfortable. Each evening, wipe your hearing aids with a soft, dry cloth. Pay extra attention to the parts that sit in or near the ear, where earwax and moisture naturally build up.

Never rinse your hearing aids under water or use cleaning sprays or alcohol unless specifically advised by your audiologist. Water and electronics are rarely good friends.

Domes and wax filters

Domes and wax filters play an important role in both comfort and sound quality. Domes sit in the ear canal and should be kept clean and intact. If a dome becomes discoloured, stiff, torn, or no longer fits securely, it should be replaced.

Wax filters protect the hearing aid from earwax. If sound becomes weaker or muffled, a blocked wax filter is often the reason. Wax filters need regular replacement — sometimes every few weeks, depending on earwax production. Your audiologist will show you how to change them safely and how often to do so. It is a small task that can make a big difference.

Moisture: the invisible challenge

Moisture is one of the most common causes of hearing aid problems. Sweat, humidity, and body heat can all affect performance. Using a drying container or dehumidifier overnight is highly recommended, especially if you live an active lifestyle.

Always remove your hearing aids before showering, swimming, or using a sauna. They appreciate rest — as long as it is dry.

Batteries and charging

For hearing aids with disposable batteries, replace the battery when sound becomes weak or distorted. Opening the battery door at night helps save power and allows moisture to escape.

Rechargeable hearing aids should be placed in their charger every night. A regular charging routine ensures reliable performance throughout the day.

Storage and safety

When not in use, store your hearing aids in their protective case. Keep them out of reach of children and pets — hearing aids are surprisingly attractive to curious hands and enthusiastic dogs.

Avoid exposing hearing aids to extreme temperatures, such as leaving them in a car or near a heat source.

When to seek help

If sound quality changes, discomfort occurs, or your hearing aids stop working despite basic care, contact your audiologist. Regular check-ups and professional cleaning help ensure your hearing aids continue to support your hearing needs.

With consistent care and proper handling, your hearing aids will remain dependable companions — helping you stay connected to conversations, sounds, and everyday life.
